CANTON, TX and 1ST MONDAY TRADE DAYS

Cleo is better, but still sleeps a lot. Think that she will perk up when we are able to get the big slide working again. Not much room to play and she is still a bit skittish. She told me, she just wishes we wouldn’t keep checking on her. She says she is FINE!  But she missed seeing this little guy. The first Cardinal we have seen this trip. Not the best photo considering I took it through the side window of the motor home and it would have been nice if he had moved over so that I could have gotten a reflection in the water…but he wouldn’t budge, despite my wishes…LOL.

First Monday Trade Days takes place on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday before the First Monday of each Month. This started in the 1800’s when folks would come to town for court the First Monday of the month, bringing things to trade or sell. At least that is what I remember Randy telling me. So this has been a happening for a very long time and has grown, and grown, and grown! There are thousands of vendors and locations spread out all along the main highway through town, then west and east as well. We only walked through a very small part of this event as it would take more than the 4 days to see everything. Some vendors are in enclosed pavilions, others are setup outside under canopies along walk ways. Without a good sense of direction, one could easily become lost. My photos don’t begin to show how crowded it is!

This reminded us of Quartzsite, but more compact and yet with more venues and vendors. They have a trolley and another bus that you can take from venue to venue. Almost everyone had those collapsible carts to carry their prize purchases in. Many vendors are retail merchants selling goods they purchased wholesale. However, there are a fair number of crafters and artisans as well. We spent about 4+hours and only managed to see about 1/5th of this event, if that! Frances and I were going to each rent an electric scooter (like grocery stores have) but they were all rented out! Bummer… Needless to say, when I got back, I set up the heating pad and didn’t move…in fact, I couldn’t move.

Following are some photos I took of the Grand Lodge and Pool Area. Also, the RV Park did fill up and we finally had neighbors. However, on Sunday and Monday everyone left and we were once again one of maybe 12 RV’s in the entire park. By Monday night, we were the only RV in our section. I know it is called 1st Monday Trade Days, but all the vendors begin to pack up on Sunday and by Monday they are gone. A lot of them travel from quite a distance each month for this event…so it must be profitable! We met a wonderful pottery vendor that came down from Branson, MO.

A couple of photos that I thought you might also enjoy.
