SIDE TRIPS While at RED BAY

We enjoyed a country drive to Florence, AL and The Shoals Area. The Shoals Area, as it is called, are actually four towns, Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia and Sheffield.

There are many interesting and historic places to visit in The Shoals area, such as the Helen Keller Home in Tuscumbia. Another is Indian Mound and Museum in Florence. Of course there are many festivals and events through out the year. One place we would have loved to visit, but didn’t, is the Coon Dog Cemetery in Cherokee, AL. Unique headstones and epitaphs pay tribute to man’s best friend. Over 225 coon dogs have been laid to rest here with the first being buried on Labor Day in 1937.

We returned to Red Bay by taking a different route and must say the country side is beautiful, even in the winter. Can only imagine what spring and fall must be like. Sorry that I didn’t take any photos of that day trip.

Another was Tupelo, MS. We actually did a drive on the Natchez Trace Parkway and ended up in Tupelo. Had a wonderful lunch very near Elvis’s home and birth place. Once again not many photos were taken, and those that were taken on the Trace are shown in that blog.

Elwyn did go into this famous hardware store, but the store employee ignored him as he must have thought he was just there to see the place and wasn’t a buying customer. Their loss…LOL.

TUPELO HARDWARE

In 1946, Elvis’ mother, Gladys brought him here to buy a bicycle. Once they arrived, a 22 caliber rifle caught Elvis’ eye, and he asked his mother to buy it instead. She wasn’t happy about purchasing a gun, so they compromised on a guitar. Forest L. Bobo, a long time employee of Tupelo Hardware, sold the guitar to the young Elvis for $7.90.

See you on the road…
