Wow…it has been many days without a post. So guess it is past time to update the blog. Sorry there aren’t many photos. I haven’t been doing my job in that department. I have no excuse…at least I can't come up with a good one.
We left Red Bay, AL Jan. 8th and had planned to stay in Canton, MS. Phoned the number, but it didn’t connect to the RV Park. It was very weird, as a recording said to buy a phone card or call the number collect. I tried the number several times, thinking I was miss-dialing. How can they expect to get business when they don’t answer their phone…and what sort of message was that anyway?
Continued on to Clinton, MS and stayed at Springridge Mobil Estates & RV Park. Glad it was just an overnight stop as we were not impressed with the place. Convenient, that is true, but not easy to get into the pull-through site. Elwyn did pull through (after we disconnected) and had to reposition by driving the motor home all the way through and then backing into the site. Whew… (Thumbs down.)
Our next stop was Shreveport, LA. We stayed two nights at Tall Pines RV Park, which is a former KOA. Nice place and nice folks, but it had rained and so the ground was a tad bit soggy. The concrete pads were old and narrow, so when exiting the motor home, you stepped onto the wet grass. Site width and length was pretty good and would recommend it as a stop as it is quiet and location is away from the I-20. (One thumb up.) Had dinner the 2nd night at Ralph & Kacoo’s, in Bossier, which is on the east side of Shreveport. Elwyn finally got his sought after Jambalaya. It wasn’t quite what he was expecting, but was very good.
Pulled into Mill Creek Ranch RV Resort (we were here in Nov.) in Canton, TX for our next stop and to spend some time with Frances and Randy before we continued our westward journey. Randy knew of an Italian Restaurant in Gun Barrel City, so that is where we went. We drove through beautiful country on the way to Gun Barrel City, which is about 20 miles south of Canton. The outside of the restaurant doesn’t look like much, but once inside, we were pleasantly surprised, as the tables were elegantly set along with an Italian ambiance. The food was excellent, among the best we have ever eaten. As we were leaving this popular restaurant was filling up with diners.
The next evening we went to Robles Mexican Restaurant and had another wonderful meal. We had seen this restaurant last time and I snapped a photo of it because there is a house on top of the roof. We had seen a black lab up there, but when I took the photo he must have been camera shy. Our visit was way too short, but there was a “hint” that maybe, just maybe, they will visit us in Oregon.
Santo, TX and the the Coffee Creek RV Resort was to be our next stop. But the driver decided to put more miles behind us. So we stayed in Abilene, TX. at Buck Creek RV Park. This seemed to be good for an overnight. However, we should have paid more attention to the information we read on the reviews and in the Big Rigs Book. We were assigned space #23 and right away we should have asked for another site. One of the reviews said #23 had its problems…which I must have forgotten about. Anyway, the width was fine, length was fine, but #23 is lined with mesquite trees on both sides, which are so close to the middle that we could only use our passenger side slide outs. We are very lucky not to have scratches from those trees, thanks to Elwyn’s expert maneuvering! This is the only site with so many trees. There were other sites available…so I think that they like to assign #23 because they have a very sick sence of humor! This is okay for an overnight if you don’t stay in #23. By the way, the short road to the RV Park is very narrow with no room to pass an on coming motor home or a trash truck. Yes, we met a trash truck half way up the road. Did manage to pass each other very carefully. What are the odds? In our case…99%. (One Thumb – maybe.)
Stayed at the Van Horn, TX. KOA on our way East and as we enjoyed our stay, we were happy to stop here again.
Oh, we had another issue with trying to fuel up in Van Horn before we pulled in to the KOA. However, we didn’t have to drive through a Truck Wash this time, but close…LOL. So we decided to wait and fuel up the next morning at a different location.
The “G” row at the KOA was out of service due to electrical problems, but the “F” row also has large pull through sites. Had dinner at the KOA Kaffe, which is run by work-kampers. The food is good, but service was just okay. We skipped dessert because we couldn’t get her attention. Skipping dessert really wasn’t a bad thing, although it was homemade blackberry or peach cobbler!!! (Thumbs Up.)
Left Texas via I-10 on the 16th. It had taken us just 4 driving days to get through Texas. Not too bad! After passing into NM, we decided that Deming would be our next overnight stay. Selected Little Vineyard RV Park and I can’t tell you how or why we did. But it must have been a nice stay, as truthfully, I can’t remember anything about it. So I have to give it a Thumbs Up! Guess that is what happens when you put on the miles.
.
On Friday, Jan. 17th, we arrived at Tombstone Territories RV Resort. We really like this park (Thumbs Up) and planned to only stay a week before moving on. However, we have extended twice now and most likely won’t leave until the 7th of Feb. We do have to move to another site on the 31st, because the site we are in has been reserved for a month by an annual visitor. We appreciate the fact that they take care of their long time visitors and had we known we were going to stay so long, I’m sure we would have been placed in a different site. It isn’t really a big deal and we only have to move two sites to our right. I think the coach needs to be re-leveled anyway. Still don’t understand why it seems to be off level by just a smidge after we have set up. This didn’t happen in Red Bay when we brought it to their attention and they leveled it several times in the bay. Oh well…what good is perfect balance anyway? LOL.
A few photos follow.
This is a photo of the weather forecaster that we have inside the motor home to tell us what the temperature is inside the bay where the water hook ups are.
Our compartment froze in Red Bay and so we had this extra forecaster and decided to use it. If we need to, we can place a small space heater inside the compartment.
The ‘outdoor’ temp is the temp inside the compartment. Indoor is our living area temp. If you take a look at the forecast for the ‘compartment’ it has everything but snow! LOL…
Should we be worried?
We had a beautiful sunset one of the first nights we were here. These photos are taken looking east as the sun set behind us.
These were taken looking toward the northwest.
Sierra Vista is just 10 miles as the crow flies, but via road it is approx. 20 miles. This is where you go to do grocery shopping etc. They have a very nice Mall with major stores. Also, there is a Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Target, Ross, K-mart just to name a few. And many wonderful chain and local restaurants.
Just leaving the park and driving 8.5 miles east.
Turn south toward the Huachuca Mountains and Fort Huachuca for about 11 miles.
Almost there… and then it is about 3 miles to the main part of the town. The Mall is another 3 miles south…but we love being in the desert!
Below are some photos of Tombstone Territories RV Park.
Here is our location…with the desert in front of us. You can see that the sites are wide, and plenty long.
Happy travels…
See you on the road…
